takayna

Since 2015 we have been campaigning for the protection of takayna / Tarkine, Australia’s largest tract of intact wilderness dominated by ancient cool temperate rainforests.

Since 2015 we have been campaigning for the protection of takayna / Tarkine, Australia’s largest tract of intact wilderness dominated by ancient cool temperate rainforests.  takayna is an Aboriginal living landscape with a globally-significant history and ongoing cultural importance.

Building on forty years of campaigns by environmentalists, we have been defending this incredible ecosystem for almost a decade and will continue until it becomes a National Park, returned to aboriginal ownership.

  • Large rainforest tracts across takayna, including Que River, Pieman River, Frankland River and Sumac Ridge, are all still standing thanks to our forest blockades and direct actions.
  • The environmental destruction caused by Shree Minerals’ failed iron ore mine at Nelson Bay River has been exposed by our campaigns.
  • Thousands of people from across Australia and around the world, have visited takayna to take part in our events including BioBlitz, Art for takayna and takayna Trail ultramarathon.
  •  In the first three months of 2022, more than 1,000 people stood strong on the  frontlines, taking action at our blockades and protests against logging and mining.
  • Our Big Canopy Campout has seen 150 people over 5 years take part in the global tree-climbing event in threatened forests in takayna, raising money and awareness for the global issue of deforestation.
  • We mobilised Melbourne with Campaigner Emma Wasson and many public events, exhibitions and a giant street puppet of the Astacopsis gouldi, the world’s largest freshwater crayfish whose habitat is threatened by logging in takayna / Tarkine.
  • Some 71 people have been arrested holding off mining giant MMG’s destruction of the Pieman Forest.
  • Venture minerals?
  • Patagonia Partnership (insert takayna film)
