Today, fifteen people walked into a logging operation which is destroying the documented habitat of the critically endangered Swift Parrot. Four people were arrested after chaining themselves to logging machinery. A total of ten people have now been arrested in this same logging coupe. The forest being logged is on the side of Mt Tongatabu, south of Hobart.
“The four people arrested today are heroes. Without them, the logging of Swift Parrot habitat would go unnoticed behind locked gates and private security guards. The Albanese and Rockliff governments are failing in their responsibility and driving the species towards extinction. Brave citizens are standing between the parrots’ survival and the government-authorized chainsaws,” Bob Brown Foundation Campaign Manager Jenny Weber said.
“Tasmania’s Premier Rockliff is well aware that logging destruction is removing critically endangered Swift Parrot nesting habitat. The Premier is responsible for this species’ rapid decline on his watch,” Jenny Weber said.
