The revelation that in 2025, four million salmon died in Tasmanian factory fish farms shows an industry operating with reckless abandon. Four million fish suffering and dying prematurely in salmon farm cages is a mortality rate of 20-25% of all fish produced. This makes Tasmanian salmon farms the most lethal and cruel agricultural industry in Australia.

Bob Brown Foundation is calling for this disgraceful industry to be removed from Tasmania’s waters permanently.

“The data reveals the horrifying truth; salmon farms are the worst form of factory farming, with shocking death rates for their animals,” said Alistair Allan, Antarctic and Marine Campaigner at Bob Brown Foundation.

“This is an industry that is cruel and deadly. With over 20% of their fish dying in captivity, those pens you see out on the water are floating cages of misery.”

“With warming waters, increased death rates, and the need to dump huge quantities of antibiotics into our waterways just to try and keep the fish from dying, it’s high time to get fish farms out of Tasmania for good,” said Alistair Allan
