A Greenland court has once again extended the unjustified imprisonment of ocean hero Captain Paul Watson until 2 December 2024. This is another in a long line of extensions without any timeline of when the Greenland courts and Danish authorities might make a decision. The imprisonment has occurred on behalf of the Japanese Government which is seeking Captain Watson’s extradition over bogus charges relating to his anti-whaling campaigns from more than a decade ago.

“The news of yet another extension of ocean conservationist Captain Paul Watson’s detention is an outrage and a shameful reflection on Denmark’s supposed liberal democracy,” said Alistair Allan, Antarctic and Marine Campaigner at Bob Brown Foundation.

“Captain Paul Watson has now been held since 2 July 2024. His detention has been repeatedly extended without any indication of when authorities will decide his fate. Danish authorities must end this drawn-out and cruel process, based on a politically motivated red notice from Japan, and do the right thing and free Captain Paul Watson.”

“Prime Minister Anthony Albanese must intervene and call on Denmark to release Paul Watson, whose work in protecting whales was so popular with the Australian public,” said Alistair Allan.
