Today forest defenders have halted logging in forests in Tasmania’s Wentworth Hills calling for immediate protection of native forests across Lutruwita / Tasmania. Bob Brown Foundation is highlighting the ongoing devastation of forests in the Central Highlands region where the oldest forests in Australia are being logged.

“I am standing in incredible ancient, alpine, tall eucalypt forests. The logging machines must be evicted. This forest contains trees when cut down that we witness fit one log to a log truck. The old carbon dense forests here are essential for a safe liveable planet, but they are being flattened. Wentworth Hills forests are close to the popular tourist destination Lake St Clair but the many tourists to this popular destination don’t know the ancient forests are being destroyed,” said Colette Harmsen, Bob Brown Foundation forest defender on site at the forest protest today.

“We’re here today taking a stand because Forestry Tasmania must be abolished, they are unprofitable, unethical, and logging here is largely unregulated and threatens the survival of our favourite wildlife. Forestry Tasmania relies on taxpayer subsidies to run their forest destroying operations that smash and burn native forest,” said Colette Harmsen.
