Photos of four giant fish pens washed up on the beach of North Bruny last night highlight the negligence of the foreign fish farm companies in Tasmania’s waters.
“It shows just how unprepared the fish farm companies really are. It is unforgivable that the fish farms’ negligence can create such a severe risk to navigation in Tasmania’s waters. This latest disaster is not the first time that pens have washed up ashore. Tasmania routinely experiences weather far worse than last night, and yet these foreign mega corporations’ failures are causing more risk on our waterways than the average yachter or boater ever would,” said Bob Brown in Hobart.
“The police must disclose the outcome of their investigation into this very serious incident.”
“The fact that these huge pens broke free from their moorings in the relatively protected D’Entrecasetaux Channel is a damning indictment of an industry that wishes to put the same pens in the often-furious Bass Strait or to expand in the aptly named Storm Bay. They simply can’t be trusted. With disease spread, mass deaths, antibiotic contamination, and negligent equipment failures, it’s time to get fish farms out of Tasmania’s waters for good,” said Alistair Allan, Antarctic and Marine Campaigner at Bob Brown Foundation.
