Antarctic krill are the foundation of one of the last intact ecosystems on Earth, feeding whales, penguins, and seals.

Without krill, the entire Southern Ocean food web collapses.

Yet massive factory trawlers are stripping krill from Antarctic waters at an industrial scale. At the same time, climate change is already reducing krill populations through sea ice loss.

Australia must act now. By pushing for a global ban on krill fishing and stopping imports, we can protect Antarctica before irreversible damage is done.

Dear Environment Minister Murray Watt,

I am appalled that Antarctic krill, the very foundation of the Antarctic ecosystem, are being hoovered up by colossal factory trawlers from one of the last great wildernesses.

Krill is vital to the health of the Southern Ocean, supporting the entire food web including whales and penguins.
 
Removing such a foundational species from an ecosystem is an environmental crime.
Krill are also an incredibly important carbon sink and are crucial in the fight against the climate crisis.

Antarctica and its wildlife are already facing unprecedented pressure from climate change impacts. Krill hatch rates are predicted to drop by as much as 50% this century due to the loss of sea ice cover.

We must give krill total protection now, if they are to have any chance in the face of this monumental challenge.

Antarctica and its wildlife deserve protection, not factory trawlers pillaging their waters. This is a straightforward first step to protecting Antarctica. Krill is caught for products we do not need. However, the whales, penguins and seals rely on them.

Given recent failures at CCAMLR to achieve any conservation outcomes, Australia must now, more than ever, step up to protect Antarctica's wilderness.

I call on both you and Prime Minister Anthony Albanese to commit that at the next CCAMLR meeting in 2025, Australia proposes a complete ban on krill fishing in Antarctica, and continues to advocate for increased marine protection areas (MPAs) in Antarctica.

I also call on the Australian Government to ban the imports of krill products into Australia immediately.
