On July 1, the NSW Treasurer will provide their Statement of Corporate Intent for Forestry NSW for the next financial year.
As a joint shareholder in the state-owned Forestry Corporation, this statement sets out their objectives and plans for the following year, and the Minister is obliged to pursue the best economic, environmental and community focused outcomes within these plans.
We know that native forest logging in New South Wales is economically wasteful, costing the taxpayer millions of dollars each year to prop up a loss-making industry. What’s worse, is that these subsidies are paying for ecological destruction, the loss of our critical carbon stocks, and the extinction of species like the Koala and the greater Glider.
Our native forests can be most beneficial to us by being protected and being allowed to continue to grow, to store carbon and to provide healthy ecosystems for people and animals alike.
We call on the Treasurer to stop prolonging the inevitable. We want to see a rapid and ambitious end to native forest logging outlined in the next Statement of Corporate Intent.
