Despite this, the big multinational corporations who own these polluting factory fish farms have the government in their pockets and so damage is allowed to happen.

That’s why as consumers we need to ask retailers to do the right thing and stop selling this environmentally damaging product.

I am a concerned citizen urging you to stop selling Tasmanian farmed salmon at Hill Street Grocers across Lutruwita / Tasmania.

Businesses can play a crucial role in protecting our oceans by making ethical decisions and refusing to sell products that are linked to environmental destruction.

In this case, industrial farmed salmon has huge impacts on marine ecosystems wherever they are around the world. The salmon industry in Tasmania is highly controversial and is well known for the damage it is causing to the rivers, bays and oceans that Tasmanians love and depend on.

As a locally owned Tasmanian company that prides itself on sustainability, it is imperative that Hill Street Grocers stop selling farmed salmon and become a supermarket that can be celebrated for its commitment to Tasmania's unique and precious marine environment.

I make this urgent demand knowing that:

• The Maugean Skate is on the edge of extinction due to fish farms in Macquarie Harbour.

• Protected native wildlife, such as Fur Seals, are shot, injured and even killed at salmon farms across the state.

• Fish farms release 10x more untreated waste into Tasmania's waters that the entire city of Hobart.

• Ecosystems and beaches get smothered in massive algal blooms caused by fish farms.

• Cramming hundreds of thousands of salmon into a small pen causes injuries and suffering, and millions of salmon suffer and die every year due to disease and stress.

This urgent call is driven by care for the future of life on Earth and our responsibility to ensure that Tasmania’s waterways are protected for generations to come.

Please remove industrial farmed salmon from your shelves.
