Bob Brown Foundation has released today shocking images of a Ringtail Possum killed by logging operations in Tasmania’s Central Highlands. The dead animal was discovered this weekend in its tree hollow home felled to the ground inside an active logging coupe.
“Every day that Forestry Tasmania is allowed to log native forests, their machines kill wildlife like this Ringtail Possum and crash their homes to the ground. This ecocide needs to immediately stop, we need to end native forest logging now,” said Jenny Weber, Bob Brown Foundation’s Campaign Director.
In conjunction with the release of images of the dead possum, forest activists are today halting the logging of Wielangta native forests where Forestry Tasmania continues to destroy verified Swift Parrot breeding habitat.
“Last summer, at the peak of their breeding season, critically endangered Swift Parrots were occupying this same forest that Forestry Tasmania is now knowingly clearfelling,” said Jenny Weber.
“I am in a tree sit in this forest where controversial timber has been logged out of critically endangered Swift Parrot habitat, and this needs to stop immediately,” said Aden Watchel
“While most logged forests here are going to export woodchipping, logged trees from this Swift Parrot breeding forest have been documented to go to the Porta Mill that supplies timber to Bunnings. So today we are sending our warning to anyone buying native forest timber: this wood comes from precious native forests and protected species habitat,” said Jenny Weber.
The protests in Wielangta are one week out from the nationwide March for Forests.
