Tonight’s ABC’s Foreign Correspondent episode on factory farmed salmon in Norway, demonstrates that wherever salmon factory farms are around the world, they are environmental nightmares. Salmon farming is now factory farming on the water and its impacts are severe. Anthony Albanese and Premier Rockliff should take warning from what environmental damages and animal welfare problems happening in Norway and act now in order to protect Australia’s marine environment from this destructive industry.

Bob Brown Foundation is calling for fish farms to be removed from Tasmania’s and Australia’s waters.

“Tasmania is not unique when it comes to experiencing the horror of factory farmed salmon. Wherever they are in the world, they are an environmental disaster,” said Alistair Allan, Antarctic and Marine campaigner at Bob Brown Foundation.

“Foreign correspondent has shown the impacts of factory farming salmon in Norway, and it’s just as bad here in Tasmania and it’s on a smaller scale. This is a clear warning that fish farms have got to go before it’s too late. The Tasmanian factory salmon farms are out of control that they had to use over 5000 kilograms of the controversial antibiotic, florfenicol, just to try and keep some farmed salmon alive, in a period of 4 months. The Norwegian salmon industry, despite being much bigger only used 500kg in 12months. It beggars’ belief how much Tasmania will have to use if we allow this industry to keep expanding.”

“From Norway to Tasmania, and everywhere else around the world, it’s time to get rid of toxic fish farms,” said Alistair Allan.
