International climate report tests Premier Rockliff to protect all native forests

September 22, 2026

A forest protest is underway this morning in Tasmania’s central highlands where defender Jennie Bock is locked onto a logging machine and forests are safe for now.

“International climate experts have this week warned that the planetary life support systems relied upon by humans have deteriorated to their worst levels ever recorded amid ongoing pollution and habitat destruction. However, they report in their annual update that while there is little time to reverse this parlous situation, humanity does still possess the knowledge and capacity to do so,” said Jenny Weber, Bob Brown Foundation Campaigns Director.

“The Planetary Health Check 2026 is a warning call for Premier Rockliff to lead a climate response and fast-track protecting all native forests across Lutruwita,” said Jenny Weber.

Ten forest defenders have taken action today against the destruction of Tasmania’s native forests with one locked onto a logging machine in Waykaywirinu / Tasmania’s Central Highlands, halting logging in the native forests of coupe BD052E.

“Logging machines in these forests are a key contributor to the habitat destruction and climate impacts that are reported by international experts. Our protest is calling for an immediate eviction of these logging machines from ancient forests that provide habitat for threatened wildlife, store vast amounts of carbon and protect the headwaters of Tasmania’s major waterways,” said Jenny Weber.

“Forests are irreplaceable carbon banks but release mega tonnes of greenhouse gases when logged and burnt. Australia has enough plantations to meet its wood needs. The forests are worth more standing. I am locked on today to preserve these forests for generations to come to enjoy,” said Jennie Bock, locked onto a logging machine.

“Native forests are far more valuable standing than they are as woodchips, timber or forest furnaces. It’s way past time to end logging that continues to destroy Tasmania’s biodiversity and causes global heating,” said Jenny Weber.

“Every hectare of native forest that Premier Rockliff can save today is habitat secured for endangered species, protected carbon stocks and preserving an ecosystem that took centuries to evolve,” said Jenny Weber.
