Today, work has begun to install environmentally destructive fish farms in the Bass Strait despite massive community opposition. A notice went out on Friday, stating that work would begin on Monday, giving almost no warning to the community. The endangered Shy Albatross, along with migrating whales and other seabirds, will be directly threatened by the installation of these environmentally disastrous fish farms.

Concerned community members will be attending a meeting at 3 pm in Burnie to voice their outrage at this project going ahead.

“Not content with destroying the marine environment in Tasmania’s south, the toxic salmon industry now begins its destruction of Bass Strait,” said Alistair Allan, Antarctic and Marine Campaigner.

“With Anthony Albanese and the federal government now firmly in the pocket of these huge corporations, even commonwealth waters are up for sale and destruction. The endangered Shy Albatross, which is found in the area proposed for these new fish farms, now faces yet another threat to its survival due to entanglement in the fish pen netting. The carnage witnessed in the salmon industry this summer should have been enough to close the industry down. Instead, it’s expanding into Bass Strait, with its rough weather and wild seas. It’s only a matter of time before another similar disaster unfolds in Bass Strait,” said Alistair Allan.
