Liberals selling snake oil to invade takayna / Tarkine regional reserve

The Liberal Party has added to a growing list of panicked, thought bubble policy announcements with its announcement of a fast-tracked major projects declaration for the ill-conceived and undercooked Whaleback Ridge wind farm in Tasmania’s takayna / Tarkine.

The proposed 427 turbine, 3 gigawatt wind farm is proposed for takayna’s World Heritage value Meredith Range Regional Reserve. It would be four times larger than any other wind development in the southern hemisphere and larger than the entire Tasmanian hydro-electric scheme output. This would require four Marinus cables at taxpayer expense.

The open heathlands of the Meredith Range Regional Reserve are home to numerous threatened species including important hunting grounds for Wedge-tailed Eagles which nest in the adjoining forests.

“This proposal ought to be assessed at the highest possible level, against the highest possible standard. If it was, it would fail. Instead, the Liberals have pushed it to their developer-designed Major Projects process to avoid the ordinary scrutiny applied to similar projects,” said Bob Brown Foundation takayna / Tarkine Campaigner Scott Jordan.

“This project has made all sorts of outlandish claims as to its benefits including exporting the electricity via Marinus link, which is not yet built, and converting electricity to hydrogen to be shipped off a new west coast port which would be dangerous and have massive environmental consequences for the west coast. A west coast port is absurd. It is a feat no one has even proposed since shipwrecks lined our roaring forties coast over 100 years ago.”

“We are used to being sold the odd bottle of snake oil at elections but this time the Liberals have teamed up with the developer to sell it by the tanker at taxpayers’ expense.”

“Major Projects designation does not address the legislative requirements for approvals of projects in public reserves,”said Bob Brown Foundation takayna / Tarkine Campaigner Scott Jordan.
