Protesters are peacefully occupying forests in Waykaywirinu / Central highlands area of Lutruwita / Tasmania. Tasmania Police are on site, as forest defenders are preventing the logging of ancient forests.

“These Brady’s Lake forests are being logged to become predominantly export woodchips for wasteful pulp and paper products. But, these high elevation forests are fragile and slow growing and have evolved over centuries,” said Jenny Weber, Bob Brown Foundation’s Campaigns Director.

Sue Abbott who was arrested after attaching herself to a logging machine and taking peaceful direct action said: “I am here today exercising my implied constitutional right to political communication by protesting in this beautiful forest. I object to state Liberal and Labor politicians ignoring the evidence that native forests need to be left standing, and I object to their cynical greenwashing politics as they pretend over and over again that the logging industry is sustainable. It is not.”

“We have recorded Swift Parrots using this forest. The logging here is a global climate crime, with immediate and direct repercussions for our local endangered and threatened species including the Tasmania Masked Owl, Spotted-tail Quoll and Tasmanian Devil,” said Jenny Weber.

“The logging of these ancient forests is unnecessary destruction and must be stopped now, not one more ancient tree in this forest should be logged. Tasmania can end all native forest logging and provide secure protection to the forests across our island,” said Jenny Weber.
