Protest demands Hill Street Grocer stop selling extinction

June 10, 2026

Today in Devonport, concerned community members have protested out the front of Hill Street Grocer over their continued sale of factory-farmed salmon.

Hill Street Grocer has been the subject of an ongoing campaign since 2024, urging the Tasmanian retailer to stop selling factory-farmed salmon, which is so damaging to the Tasmanian marine environment.

Bob Brown Foundation has collected over 700 in-person signatures from shoppers at Hill Street Grocer who support its removal of farmed salmon from its shelves.

“Hill Street Grocer has an opportunity to be the first supermarket to stop selling factory farmed salmon and Tasmanians would celebrate and support them for it,” said Alistair Allan, Antarctic and Marine Campaigner at Bob Brown Foundation.

“As a wholly Tasmanian business, they can see for themselves the damage that the salmon industry does to our marine environment and they can do their part to protect Tasmania’s waterways. All around the world, factory salmon farming is being exposed as an environmental and animal welfare catastrophe. Tasmania is no different. Hill Street Grocer’s main supplier, Huon Aquaculture, lost their RSPCA certification due to animal cruelty. It’s time for Hill Street Grocer to stop selling factory-farmed salmon,” said Alistair Allan.
