A plea for secure forest protection in Tasmania’s Central Highlands is renewed today by seven forest defenders who are this morning occupying ancient forests in Waykaywirinu / Central Highlands on the shore of Lake King William.

“Logging in Tasmania’s Wentworth Hills is destroying Tasmania’s largest eucalyptus forests in some of the worst logging occurring in Australia today,” said Jenny Weber, Bob Brown Foundation Campaigns Director.

“Today’s protest is in forests at the headwaters of Timtumili Minanya / River Derwent, home to many endangered species. The critical services that forests provide to our planet are being destroyed in this logging, as a watershed and carbon storehouses, this forest is a stark example of why logging must cease nationwide.”

“Extensive large scale forest destruction has been carried out in this region for far too long. Vast tracts of ancient alpine eucalypt forest and patches of temperate rainforest have been flattened. The region is home to nine threatened fauna species including the endangered Tasmanian devil, White goshawk, Wedge-tailed eagle and for the rare and vulnerable Spotted-tail quoll, but they are losing their habitat every day logging is continuing,” said Jenny Weber.
