Concerned community members have returned to Hill Street Grocer in West Hobart today, calling on the Tasmanian supermarket to stop selling industrially farmed salmon and cut its ties with an industry driving environmental destruction across Tasmania.

The protest is part of the Bob Brown Foundation’s “Hill Street Gross” campaign, which is targeting Hill Street Grocer over its continued sale of farmed salmon, despite growing evidence of the damage the industry is causing to Tasmania’s waterways, wildlife and marine ecosystems.

The campaign is calling on Hill Street Grocer to stop selling farmed salmon and show leadership by putting Tasmania’s environment ahead of profits from a destructive industry.

“We are here again, outside Hill Street Grocer, because this Tasmanian supermarket continues to sell a product that is having devastating impacts on Lutruwita / Tasmania’s waterways. The toxic salmon industry is responsible for killing wildlife, polluting waters and multiple animal welfare concerns. By selling industrially farmed Tasmanian salmon, Hill Street is helping prop up this toxic industry and contribute to the extinction of animals such as the Maugean Skate and the Red Handfish,” said Ellen Maddock, Bob Brown Foundation’s Marine Campaign Organiser.
