After four years of delay, Bob Brown Foundation’s request for reconsideration of a decision to approve the expansion of the Hawkes Creek silica mine without EPBC assessment has been overturned and replaced with a new decision imposing conditions related to Tasmanian Masked Owl, Wedge-tailed Eagle, Black Gum and Brookers Gum.

“Four years ago we sought reconsideration of a flawed decision to allow the Hawkes Creek mine expansion to proceed without Federal EPBC assessment. Today we have been vindicated, after a process involving our submission of extensive evidence of likely impacts on eagles, owls and Brooker’s and black gums. The Commonwealth has remade the decision imposing ten permit conditions that attempt to mitigate impacts on those species,” said Bob Brown Foundation Campaigner Scott Jordan.

“While we don’t support this mine expansion which will result in the loss of important threatened species habitat, we are pleased that we have been able to force a revocation of the original flawed decision.”

“The efforts of our science team have been critical in doing a job that the company and the Commonwealth had failed to do,” said Scott Jordan.
