Styx Forest defence continues

On the day Tasmanian Liberals plan to announce more extensions to native forest logging, citizens are defending the forests from logging in the Styx Valley of the Giants.

“Tasmania’s government and Forestry Tasmania must halt the destruction of this ancient, majestic forest. The centuries old trees have the same right as us to live, grow and have a critical role on this beautiful planet,” said Viola Barnes, currently protesting at the Styx Valley.

“Today’s protest in the Styx forests is calling for an immediate end to native forest logging. Tasmania’s forests campaign has been ongoing for the last decade as the government has failed to protect the critical carbon storehouses and wildlife habitats that are the island’s native forests. Now native forests are on the election agenda, we call on voters to support only the future parliamentarians who will secure protection for native forests,” Jenny Weber, Bob Brown Foundation’s Campaigns Manager said.

“Tasmania’s new parliament must do the right thing and get the small number of people in native forest logging out of native forests once and for all,” Jenny Weber said.

“Tasmanian Liberals are due to announce extensions to the native forest logging wood supply agreements today. A bad move that will lock in taxpayers paying more compensation for forest destruction. It will lock in more devastating logging, burning and wood-chipping of Tasmania’s forests in a dangerous move in this climate emergency,” Jenny Weber said.

“Native forests and their dependent wildlife need protection. While governments fail to protect native forests and commit to expanding the destruction of forests, the citizens are protecting the forests that are in logging coupe TN062G for the second week of direct action, holding off the loggers at the gate that locks up public forests to allow for logging destruction,” said Jenny Weber.
