167 runners participated in the seventh annual Takayna Trail ultra-marathon event at Waratah on Saturday, raising funds for Bob Brown Foundation’s campaign to protect Takayna.
The event, on a modified course due to fires still burning in parts of Takayna, had runners experiencing rainforests and heathlands over 22, 37 and 62 kilometer courses.
“A stunning day in Waratah, hundreds of happy people and World Heritage rainforest to save. This is the best of humanity in action,” said Bob Brown.
“Our Takayna trail-running event is amongst the world’s best. It was phenomenal to witness Hobart’s Ben Burgess cross the finish line after running 62km through ancient wild county in just five hours. Ben was among a community of 167 wonderful people who have raised $394,000 and the plight of the threatened Takayna worldwide. Over the past seven years, nearly 1000 runners have collectively raised over $ 2 million to drive our campaign,” said Jenny Weber, Campaigns Manager with Bob Brown Foundation.
“Year on year, the Takayna Trail event grows stronger and more passionate about its action for earth. This small example of a committed, energetic and progressive community is a sign of our times and our power to use what we love to protect what we love. We run in Takayna because we love wild places, moving in nature and being part of passionate community,” said Running Lead Majell Backhausen.
