Today, the Bob Brown Foundation and concerned citizens protested outside Hill Street Grocer in Sandy Bay in what is the first in a series of protests at stores, supermarkets and restaurants that sell Tasmanian farmed salmon.

Tasmanian farmed salmon is massively environmentally destructive, and the foundation calls on all retailers of this toxic product to cease selling it immediately.

“Wherever salmon farms are around Tasmania they cause huge environmental damage. We are calling on all retailers to stop selling this awful product” said Alistair Allan, Antarctic, and Marine Campaigner at the Bob Brown Foundation.

“We intend to protest retailers all around Tasmania who are selling this product, and educate consumers at the same time just how destructive farmed salmon is to our beautiful waterways and the animals that live there. We call on Hill Street Grocers to stop selling toxic salmon and inform their customers whether or not they are selling salmon linked to the imminent extinction of the Maugean Skate.”

“Hill Street Grocers has a chance to become a change maker, like the head chef at MONA, and become the first supermarket in Tasmania to not sell toxic Tasmanian salmon at all. They are a Tasmanian company that should care about Tasmania. If Hill Street Grocers can understand the damage fish farms are causing in Macquarie Harbour, they can understand the damage it does everywhere. It would be fantastic as a shopper to know your chosen supermarket doesn’t take part in destroying our marine environment. Native fur seals and seabirds are routinely attacked, shot at, and even killed by this destructive industry, farmed salmon simply shouldn’t be on retailers’ shelves or menus,” said Alistair Allan.
