A development application for a giant waste dump in Tasmania’s Central Highlands shows just how far-reaching the impacts of the factory fish farm industry are.
The application reveals that 85% of the 73,500 tonnes of waste to be dumped at the proposed site comes from the toxic salmon industry.
Bob Brown Foundation is calling for all fish farms to be removed from Tasmania.
“Not only do industrial salmon farms turn our waterways into a dump site, they now need 1500 ha of the Central Highlands to dump their toxic waste and dead fish into,” said Alistair Allan, Antarctic and Marine Campaigner at Bob Brown Foundation.
“Rather than destock their pens, the salmon industry is looking for more room to dump the bodies of the salmon that will inevitably suffer and die in the cages this summer, so they can profit as much as possible.”
“This application shows that the salmon companies know another mass death event is coming – it’s part of their business model – and they are perfectly happy to let millions of noble creatures, who in the wild swim for thousands of kilometres, to slowly swim in circles until they die a miserable death.”
“Premier Rockliff must act now, before this summer, and get fish farms out of Tasmania’s waters for good,” said Alistair Allan.
