The news of another 4 whale deaths in Antarctica due to industrial krill fishing and toothfish longlining is the impetus to ban all industrial fishing in one of the world’s last great wild places.

The Bob Brown Foundation is calling on the Commission for the Conservation of Antarctic and Marine Living Resources to ban all fishing at the next CCAMLR meeting. 

“Krill is caught for products society simply doesn’t need,” said Alistair Allan, Antarctic, and Marine Campaigner at the Bob Brown Foundation.

“It is appalling that 3 whales died this year as part of Antarctic krill plundering, that empties the Antarctic of this keystone species, just to feed to farmed salmon, cats, and dogs and to create supposed health products”

“The fact that huge supertrawlers are sucking krill out of the great wilderness that is Antarctica, and longliners are setting tens of thousands of hooks in the Southern Ocean is a crime against nature. It’s time to end all fishing in Antarctica and the Southern Ocean,” said Alistair Allan.
